A bar shaped or rod-shaped gear with a straight tooth profile and an infinitely large diameter cylindrical gear is called a rack. The definition of a rack in Japanese JIS standards is a bar shaped or rod-shaped object with teeth of the same shape and continuous spacing on its surface. A spur gear that meshes with a rack is called a pinion gear. The meshing of the two can convert rotational motion into linear motion, or convert linear motion into rotational motion. In addition, from the configuration of the gear shaft, the rack is the same as the spur gear and internal gear, and can be classified as a parallel shaft. (Power transmission efficiency is 98.0-99.5%)
The rack has straight racks, which are relatively easy to make. There are also helical gears with high strength and quietness, suitable for high-speed operation. In addition, helical gears and helical gears with the same helix angle (opposite helix direction) are used together, but due to their helical profile, axial forces may also occur.
The devices that use racks mainly include handling devices, industrial machinery, printing machines, robots, and steering devices for automobiles. However, gears are often compared to ball screws that can also transmit linear motion.
Compared to it, the rack mainly has the following advantages.
·It is possible to withstand larger loads by changing the size (modulus) of the teeth.
·Splicing can be achieved by processing the joint surface of the rack, so that there is no limit to the length of the rack.
·It can be used for various purposes by changing the material, whether or not it is ground, whether or not it is heat-treated, and the shape.
On the other hand, gears also have disadvantages such as easy generation of backlash. Ball screws have a very high power transmission efficiency (over 90%) and advantages such as achieving zero backlash by increasing pressure. But there are also drawbacks, such as when the length is long, the threaded part is prone to deformation, so in practice, it is very difficult to produce ball screws that are over 2 meters long.
The accuracy of the rack is affected by factors such as tooth pitch deviation, whether the tooth surface is ground or not, and whether there is heat treatment. In addition, the bending amount of the rack and the dimensional tolerance of the entire length are also important factors affecting the accuracy of the rack. The JIS standard does not specify the accuracy level of the gear rack, therefore, Xiaoyuan Gear Industry manages according to the gear rack accuracy level that our company has.
The materials used for the racks in KHK standard gears include mechanical structure specific carbon steel (S45C), SCM440 (medium carbon alloy steel), and SCM415 (low carbon alloy steel), SUS303 and SUS304 in stainless steel, C3604 (quick cut copper) in non-ferrous metals, and MC901 and MC602ST in engineering plastics. In addition, according to customer needs, different heat treatments (quenching and tempering, high-frequency quenching, carburizing quenching, laser quenching, etc.) can be applied based on different materials. The shape of KHK racks is also diverse. In addition to the general strip shape, circular racks with a circular cross-section and flexible racks that can be freely bent can also be provided.
